Client Dinners Aren’t the Problem. The Unmarked Days Around Them Are.

Most of the men I speak to already know the dinner is coming.

They can see it in the calendar. Client meal. Investor night. Board dinner in another city.

They brace for it.

Sometimes they even plan around it.

Protein earlier. Lighter lunch. A decision about wine before they sit down.

That’s not where most of them lose the plot.

The dinner is visible. Visible problems get managed.

What quietly undoes the week is everything unmarked around it.

The days that never make the strategy meeting

I see the same pattern on travel weeks. The flight out. Airport food because the meeting ran long and the lounge was the only option.

A hotel breakfast that starts as coffee and somehow becomes pastry, eggs, juice, and a second plate because the buffet removes every natural stop sign.

Lounge grazing between connections. A late room service plate after a delayed landing because ordering felt easier than thinking.

None of that was the big dinner.

None of it felt like a decision that needed a strategy.

Then the big dinner arrives, he handles it reasonably well, and still ends the week heavier, softer, and confused about why the plan failed when he “only had two proper meals out.”

He did not fail the dinners.

He ignored the unmarked days.

Time-zone fog is a nutrition problem

Cross a few time zones and your hunger cues stop being reliable.

You are awake when you should be asleep.

You are hungry at odd hours.

Hotel clocks, meeting blocks, and “just get through the morning” become the operating system.

That is when men default to whatever is closest: lounge snacks, bakery next to the conference centre, the mini bar, a second breakfast because the first one was at 5am local time and the body has no idea what day it is.

This is not a willpower story.

It is an unmarked environment with no defaults.

If your fat loss plan only has rules for restaurants with waiters and wine lists, it’s incomplete for the life you actually live.

Why the big dinner gets all the attention

Client dinners feel consequential.

They are social, commercial, visible, easy to talk about, and easy to blame.

Airport terminals and hotel breakfast rooms do not feel like part of the brand.

They feel like logistics.

So the plan gets built around the glamorous friction and leaves the boring friction untouched.

I watch men nail the steak and vegetables at dinner, then undo two days of structure with unmarked grazing they would never put in a food log because it didn’t feel like a meal.

The body doesn’t care about your categories.

Calories and protein still count when the event has no name.

What to install instead

You do not need a rigid travel diet.

You need defaults for the unmarked hours.

Decide breakfast before you land: protein first, one starch if you want it, and skip open-ended buffet looping.

Treat lounges like a menu, not a free zone.

If you eat there, choose once, plate it, sit down, and do not graze across two hours of emails and boarding calls.

Protect the day before and the day after the dinner.

Have a default for delayed, exhausted, time-zone nights: room service protein and vegetables, or a simple ordered meal with a clear end. “I will figure it out when I get there” is how unmarked days win.

Count travel days as part of the plan, not exceptions to it. If half your month involves airports and hotels, those days are the plan.

If this is landing

If you already train, already try to be sensible at dinner, and still feel like travel weeks erase the progress, look at the hours that never made it onto the strategy.

That is usually the gap.

If you want a system that assumes airports, hotels, lounges, and client dinners are normal rather than special occasions, the next step is a conversation.

P.S. If you want to see the exact process I use with CEOs, founders and senior executives who need to get lean without blowing up their schedule, travel, or client dinners, I broke it down here: https://start.helenparkerfitness.com/phased/
