They weren't lazy. They were running the wrong plan.
Most of the men I coach said some version of the same sentence before they hired me.
"I know what to do. I just need to actually do it."
They meant it. They were smart, driven and used to winning.
And they'd still been stuck for years.
Not because they lacked effort. Because they kept making the same handful of mistakes.
Here they are, so you can skip a few of them.
1. They built a plan around a week they didn't have
This is the big one, so it goes first.
They wrote a plan for a calm, predictable week. Five sessions, perfect meals, early nights.
Then real life showed up. Flights. Board meetings. Client dinners that ran late.
The plan didn't bend, so it broke.
The fix: Build for the week you actually live. A plan that works on the road and at the restaurant table is the only plan that works for a founder.
2. They treated it as a discipline problem
When it didn't stick, they blamed themselves.
These were men who were disciplined everywhere else. In the business, with their teams, with their money.
Discipline wasn't missing. Strategy was.
The fix: Stop asking for more willpower. Ask whether the plan makes sense for your life. When the strategy's right, the execution's the easy part.
3. They trained harder to fix it
When results stalled, the answer was more.
More sessions. More cardio. More classes that left them soaked and flattened.
And the results went backwards. More fatigue, more hunger, less progress.
The fix: Train smarter, not more. A few focused strength sessions, recovered properly, beat a heroic schedule that leaves you drained for the afternoon you still have to lead.
4. They started over every January
Keto one year. Fasting the next. A new class, a new app, a new tracker.
Each one worked for a while. Then it didn't.
So they started again. And again.
The fix: Pick an approach you can still be running in July. Consistency beats novelty, every time.
5. They trained like they did at 25
The workouts came from a different decade.
Back then they could sleep less, train hard and bounce back by the morning.
Now they carry a business, a calendar and a lot of decisions before they pick up a weight.
The fix: Train for the man you are now. Strength at the centre, recovery built in, and a dose your life can actually support.
6. They lived off the athlete they used to be
Plenty of them had been proper athletes. Swimmers, runners, cyclists, triathletes.
That history became a story they told themselves. They'd always been in good shape, so they assumed they'd get back there.
But the years in the boardroom quietly added up.
The fix: Respect the athlete you were, then train the man you are. The foundation's still there. It just needs a new plan built on top of it.
7. They knew what to do and didn't do it
This one frustrated them the most.
They'd read the books. They knew the basics. Eat protein, lift weights, sleep more.
Knowing wasn't the gap. Structure and check-ins were.
The fix: Put the same accountability around your body that you put around your business. Someone who checks in, adjusts the plan and keeps you moving when the week goes sideways.
8. They never invested in themselves
They'd spend on the business without blinking. Software, advisers, hires, travel.
But paying for their own health felt like an indulgence.
So they kept trying to do it alone.
The fix: Treat yourself like your most important asset. You wouldn't run the company without the right people around you. Don't run your body that way either.
If this is landing
If you saw yourself in a few of these, that's normal.
It doesn't mean you've failed. It means you've been working hard with the wrong plan.
The good news is that every one of these is fixable.
If you want training and nutrition built around the life you actually run, the next step is a conversation.
P.S. If you want to see the exact process I use with CEOs, founders and senior executives who need to get lean without blowing up their schedule, travel or client dinners, I broke it down here: https://start.helenparkerfitness.com/midsectionmethod/
P.P.S. Not ready for that yet? That's fine.
